Nighthawks

Nighthawks, by Edward Hopper

Born in Nyack, New York

Nighthawks was made in 1942.

My first impression of this painting, is that it is very well thought out. The artist must have been very careful and very anal about his details. What i see in this painting is very complete. It seems he was painting an old-fashioned diner with the table around the bar and the very old coffee makers. It also says Phillies so clearly he had some motivation for making this painting. I like this painting a lot, because it really shows what specificity can do for something like this.
Edward Hopper went to the Ashcan school for art, and this changed him drastically, he started to depict not the chaos of urban living but the sense of urban isolation. He says he painted Nighthawks because he saw this diner where two streets met which was very intriguing to him, also he says he was painting the loneliness of the city.
My analysis on this painting is that it is very carefully painted and thought out. He really uses emphasis the most in this painting. He uses the contrast of color and the placement in this picture. He also uses motion as well though, the people all seem to be connected in some way or another. I especially like the emphasis put on the bartender, it seems like he is in my opinion the main man in the picture.

The principles of Design

Principles of Design- helps artists organize shapes, lines, forms, and colors to communicate effectively.

Balance- The visual weight of an artwork feel equally distributed

Symmety- Its the same thing if u draw a line down it.

Approximately symmetrical-almost symmetrical

Asymetry- oppisite of symmetry

Radial- If u draw a line anywhere it will be the same on the right and the left

Emphasis- when one element in an artwork appears to be more important or attract the most attention, we say it creates empahasis, and the three types of emphasis placement, contrast, and grouping.

Rythem and movement-how the artist guides the viewer through a work of art

Leading lines

Proportion- size relationships parts to one another or the whole but in the piece of art.
colors-
shapes -
forms-

Unity- a feeling that all the element

Variety- is achieved by introducing some differences into pictures to increase visual difference

Found-object sculpture

I began my Found Object sculpture with a trophy and a computer screen. I then took the trophy apart and thought about making an even bigger trophy but soon realized that a face would be much better. After this realization, I cut speakers out of a boombox as ears, this was clearly a metaphor for no input and all output. On the top, is meant to be a crown and overall, it is supposed to be Louis the 13th the king of France whose head was chopped off. During the critique, i learned how my sculpture needed more color and in the future i will make sure to work on that. Personally, i thought that this has been my best work of art as an artist.

Mid-term Grades

This term, i have made a lot of progress as an artist. Before i ever came to Beaver, I thought and knew i was not a very good artist. Then when i started at Beaver, i started to see how i was getting better small steps at a time. First it was with the collaborative drawings, where I learned that I help other people while they helped me. Then with the pour exercises, I found that i could roll paint and turn it into different shapes. The Line Story Collage taught me that i had gotten a lot better at turning lines into all different kinds of metaphors. Finally, the Found Object Sculpture showed myself that i had improved greatly at Art because I even thought my sculpture had turned out well. Overall, this term started out slow at the beginning and then jumped out after i started to realize i had more potential in Art. I feel that by the end of this term, i will have much more strength as an artist, and also, by the end of the year i feel that I will have reached my highest potential.

My Drawing has been sacked

Today, we dropped everything and drew. What we drew though, was the interesting part of the class. Our teacher, set up sacks full of crazy and random objects. Ranging from water, to ink, and to a box. Our goals, were to start drawing the big general things at first and then incorporate the smaller things. The way i accomplished this was to take my mind off of the things inside the sacks and just draw the outlines. After I had completed that i moved on to the objects inside and drawing their outlines. Then i started to draw the little things that i could see, like crinkles and ruffles in the plastic. This class was very interesting because i saw how much i have improved at drawing since the first class.

Charcole drawings

Today, to make the drawing i had to accomplish three things to allow myself to do it. I had to let go of any feelings i had toward my drawing. Then i had to to shut my other half of my brain down and just concentrate on the table and the things on it. Lastly, i had to remember that this was my work and that if i liked the final product than it was some of my best work.
